Dr Anil Ratnam
MB BCh BAO, ACCSMS, FRACGP
Dr Anil is a specialist General Practitioner who has a special interest in skin cancer medicine and is our full time skin cancer doctor. He is originally from Australia but studied overseas attaining his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2007. He has completed various certificates in skin cancer medicine including the Advanced Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine and Surgery from the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. He is currently undertaking the Advanced Certificate of Dermoscopy and will then look to attain fellowship from the Skin Cancer College of Australasia in the near future. He is an accredited skin cancer doctor and has been servicing our community for the past 3 years. Anil is skilled in the detection of skin cancers and is proficient in more complex procedures reducing the need for specialist referrals in many cases. He has identified and treated more than 25 melanomas already this year. Apart from surgical treatment he also offers many non-surgical treatments such as Efudix, Picato, Aldara and Photodynamic Therapy.
Dr David Gunn
RACGP, CCFP, FCFP
Dr Gunn is a Canadian GP with over 13 years of experience. He has always worked as a GP but also has many years of experience in Emergency Room and Addictions Medicine.
Dr Gunn has experience in all aspects of family healthcare but has special areas of interest in paediatrics, mental health, palliative care, chronic pain and sports medicine with a focus on non pharmacologic treatment of musculoskeletal pain and cannabinoid (medical cannabis) medicine.
Dr Gunn and his family moved to Australia in 2017 and have made the Northern Rivers their new home.

Matt Frost - Podiatrist
Matthew is a Podiatrist from Rightfoot Podiatry and Footwear. He works in Ballina and Lismore predominantly in Clinics but also works in nursing homes and attends home visits. Matt joined the Prema House family in 2014 and has enjoyed working within the multidisciplinary health team it has to offer. After completing his studies at the University of Newcastle, Matt moved to the Northcoast for the great weather and lifestyle it has to offer.
Matt grew up playing and is still involved in a number of sports which initially lead him into Podiatry. Having suffered from Shin splints as a teenager, the only treatment that worked was offered by a Podiatrist. Matt has a great interest in biomechanics and human movement that causes sport related injuries. He has a passion for Biomechanical based chronic injuries and preventative interventions with the use of Orthotic therapy and Acupuncture. Other areas Matt has a keen focus on are:
- General foot care
- Diabetic foot management
- Ingrown nail treatment and prevention
- Children's feet and development
Dr John McKiernan
John is a local product of the Northern Rivers, originally from Murwillumbah, and currently resides here in Lismore. Initial university training in marine biology morphed into the study of medicine when he realised the conversation with marine parasites wasn’t as interesting as interacting with humans. Dr. McKiernan obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Queensland and has worked in hospitals (including the Lismore Base Womens Care Unit) and as a GP in QLD, NSW, Tasmania and the NT. He maintains an interest in men’s health.
Dr Mercia Van Jaarsveld
MD, CCFP, FRACGP
Dr Mercia Van Jaarsveld joined Prema House Medical Centre in April 2018 after moving to Australia from Canada with her family. Dr Van Jaarsveld has 18 years experience as a GP in South Africa, Canada and now Australia.
Lauren Baker - Psychologist
Lauren Baker is a Clinical Psychologist earning her Bachelor of Psychology at the University of New England (Armidale) and Master of Clinical Psychology at Griffith University (Gold Coast). Lauren has experience in both public and private health care settings. Lauren mainly works from an evidence based cognitive behavioural framework; however she uses an eclectic approach to ensure treatment plans are individualised with a strong focus on the neuroscience behind mental health difficulties. Lauren works with both adolescents and adults, who present with a broad range of difficulties, including: anxiety disorders, depression, grief and loss, relationship and adjustment difficulties, and chronic health problems. Lauren also has a strong interest in suicide prevention. Lauren is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) including the APS Clinical College.
